The Battle

There is a battle raging on within us.

A battle between our base instincts and our noble ideals.

A battle between the side of us that tells us to lie on the couch, read celebrity gossip magazines, watch TV, surf the web, play mindless games & drink ourselves to sleep. And the side that asks us to exercise, read the newspaper, watch a documentary, learn something new, meditate, contemplate religion & spirituality, go on a road trip & explore a city.

A battle between the side of us that tells us to buy a bigger TV, let our friends take care of their own problems, that we don’t owe our co-workers anything. And the side that suggests we donate money to a good cause, lend our friends a helping hand, and reach out to a struggling co-worker.

A battle between the side of us that tells us to stay on in the same miserable, mind-numbing, dead-end circumstances that we’ve grown comfortable with. And the side that dreams of the day we enrol in college, take evening classes, pursue a Master’s degree, chase an exciting new career path, and move to a new city.

A battle between the side of us that tells us to keep harboring old enmities, allow old friendships to wither, relive our worst moments repeatedly, and live life with every bitterness etched on our face. And the side that suggests we let go of petty grudges, mend ailing friendships, learn from & then forget past injustices, and move on with our lives.

A battle between the side of us that tells us that anything goes as long as no one’s watching, that the only sin worth regretting is the one you’re caught with, and that life success is measured by how well you’ve done for yourself. And the side that knows that character is all about what you do when no one is watching, that getting away with something is no reason to do it, and that life success is best measured by how much good you’ve done for others.

There is a battle raging within each of us. No matter how successful or dysfunctional one may seem, we all have within us the same angels & demons.

The real question to ask: Which side is going to win?

“The one you feed.”

This post is inspired by the following Cherokee legend. Kudos for the brilliant message.
